Upko: We’ll oppose any bid to revive ISA

Any attempt to bring back the ISA will be a step back for the nation, says Upko.

KOTA KINABALU: The United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) said any move to revive the Internal Security Act (ISA) will discredit the current administration.

Upko secretary-general Donald Peter Mojuntin said any attempt to revive the ISA will show a lack of conviction and commitment to a wise decision.

“Upko will oppose any suggestions or proposals to bring back the ISA,” he said.

He added that bringing back the ISA would be a step back when the country was heading to become a developed nation.

“Malaysia is a recognised parliamentary democracy and its citizens are mature and knowledgeable.

“There’s no place for excessively harsh and unpopular laws like the ISA,” said Peter.

He said the existing laws were more than sufficient to secure the internal security of the country.

“It’s a question of how efficiently and effectively we enforce those laws,” he added.
